(6/28)
Today we (chaperones) went to Köln (Cologne), Germany.

Initially we were given two options: We could hiking up a wine vineyard all day (too much work), or go touring Köln. We chose the latter so as to have a nice, relaxing day of light walking. So the first thing we did after driving the two hours from Mainz was...CLIMB 509 STAIRS TO THE TOP OF THE COLONGE CATHEDRAL.

See it here: http://www.anicursor.com/colpicb.html

We seriously almost didn't make it. My legs already were hurting for some reason and this was NOT the cure. But we did make it and it was awesome. The cathedral itself is a sight. It took over 600 years to build because of lack of funds. But then in the late 1800s they were like, "Hey, we like that style again. Let's get tons of money and finish it!" First thing I though was, "They should have filmed 'Two Towers' here." Very cool. Interestingly, it was not harmed during the war. I heard that most of the huge cathedrals around here were not destroyed...hmm...

After we came back DOWN the 509 stairs, we went to the Chocolate Museum, seen here:

It felt like we were IN "Picture, Picture" from Mr. Rogers's house. We got to see the entire process of who it is made and being wrapped and all that. Julie got some truffels...which means I need to go to bed now. hehe

Oh, and we had lunch at this little place and the waiter was horribly rude and inept. The food was great, though, and I had this special beer they have there which got better as I ate my lunch. Again, hmm...

Tomorrow we have lunch with Herr Geörgg(?) and spend the rest of the day relxing. I'm almost done with Yancey's book and have "Holes" and "A Prayer for Owen Meany" to tackle next. Perhaps I'll hit "holes" first since it's lighter in content and pages (nearly 500 less). I've become a reading fiend during this trip...I love it.
